Constitution:

Aims

  • We have consistently urged paramilitary groupings to renounce violence, condemned various bombings (such as Warrington) and called on the State to account for its actions over various events such as Bloody Sunday in Derry in 1972.

  • Terrorism, or the threat of terrorism, can play no part in a democratic society.

  • We seek a public acceptance of this by both republican and loyalist paramilitary organisations. We urge these groups to declare a permanent end to the use of physical force, in line with the report of the International Body on Decommissioning, chaired by Senator George Mitchell.

We support the following measures for creating the conditions for a peaceful and
democratic society in Northern Ireland and in these islands:

  • Enabling the formation of more accountable democratic institutions of governance within Northern Ireland which would have the freely expressed widespread and cross-community support of a majority of people of Northern Ireland: and which would operate in full accordance with a Bill of Rights. It may be easier to initiate this process at local authority level, providing a range of  services, before moving, as mutual trust develops, to a region-wide association or assembly.
