participation of the IRA, who had now abandoned 'armed struggle' for
constitutional politics. If a Labour Government had introduced equal civil
rights there would have been no need for a NICRA. There would have been no
ultra-left 'People's Democracy' to infiltrate it and under its banner
deliberately provoke violence; no Provisional IRA/Sinn Fein; no Bloody
Sunday; no hunger strikes; and no need for a Good Friday Agreement.
Confidence building measures
Talk is of the need for confidence building measures. For "confidence
building " measures the Prime Ministers of both countries should emulate
David Trimble. The Taoiseach should apologise for the treatment of
Protestants in the Republic. Tony Blair should admit that past Labour
Governments had abdicated their responsibility to safeguard UK citizens
from the abuse of power and apologise to Northern Ireland's Catholics. The
LPIS should be disaffiliated; the 'Model Letter' withdrawn, and the rules
of the Labour Party pertaining to qualifications for membership upheld.
Justice, democracy and peace require no less.
